Nymph

A general term for maidens who occupy rivers, springs, mountains, etc.

The name nymph literally means Bride; there are several specific types of nymphs:

  1. Okeanid (a nymph of the ocean);
  2. Naiad (a nymph of a river, lake and spring);
  3. Hamadryad or Dryad (a nymph of a tree);
  4. Sylph (a nymph of the air); and
  5. Oread (a nymph of a mountain).
